Summer on a Northern Shore

Novella published by H. Lewis-Foster 2022

Fenbury is an English seaside town, where life trundles along nicely. Jake Etheridge has lived there all his life and is happy working at Den’s café, but the year is 1968 and the world is changing. Sexual relations between men are no longer against the law - or at least not as illegal as they used to be. Jake’s best friend, Harry, takes full advantage of their new freedom, but Jake is more cautious. The law may have changed, but Jake knows people’s attitudes aren’t always so quick to follow. Besides, he's quite a romantic at heart and doesn't want to have sex with a stranger just because he can.

When Ira Persey comes into the café, Jake finds him attractive in every way, although he’s not so keen on Fi, the rather snooty woman he’s with. Jake is delighted when he sees Ira again a few weeks later, but he has no idea how eventful this northern summer is going to be.

Australian cricketer Nat Seddon is one of the world's best bowlers. He’s also gay, but he keeps his private life to himself and he never fools around on tour. On the last day of his team's Ashes tour of England, Nat meets Scott Alverley, England's promising new batsman. Against his better judgment, Nat spends the evening with Scott, but instead of the night of fun he expected, Nat finds himself playing agony uncle to a total innocent. Even so, Nat is utterly charmed by Scott and gives up the beach holiday he’d planned for a rain-soaked week in the north of England. By the time he takes his flight home to Brisbane, Nat has fallen for Scott, and there's not a damn thing he can do about it. The hectic sporting calendar is a constant obstacle to their growing romance, as Nat and Scott are rarely on the same continent. They both know they must make some tough decisions if they are going to hold on to the love they found in the Ashes.
